It’s that time of year again when Christmas will be upon us in a matter of weeks, so with that I thought I’d run through some decorating tips.

Work out what sort of theme you want. From traditional to country casual, winter wonderland or tropical – it can be whatever you want it to be.

Once you have your theme, decide on the colours for your scheme. It could be silver or traditional green and red. Brass and gold are big this year, but rose gold is also making an entry – which seems to be everywhere at the moment.

I’m probably going to opt for a nature inspired theme. A tree adorned with silver and red, coupled with timber decorations. I normally set up a smaller tree in our second living area that the kids decorate to their hearts content.

For the table I’m using rough sawn timber logs (about an inch thick) that I sourced myself and got cut to order (I do have access Red Gum logs, so that helps). I’ll create vignettes on the larger slabs and use native flowers from our garden in various size bottles, with a sprinkle of sparkle. I also have super large tinsel and decorations for outside, that adorn our nature strip tree and our front garden.

Think about your lighting too – fairy lights indoors and out create a magical atmosphere and really set the scene. Solar lights are perfect for placing anywhere in the garden and small battery operated fairy lights work beautifully under a cloche, draped over the mantelpiece, running along your table, and around windows.

Most of all – have fun with it!
